Maya Angelou

This post is not beauty or fashion related, it is simply something I want to share about an amazing women who sadly passed away last year on the 28th of May- Maya Angelou.
I first heard about her after in English we were put into groups and read different books. One of the books was ‘I know why the caged bird sings’ by Miss Angelou. To my disappointment, I was not given this book. However knowing she had some connection to Oprah Winfrey, a massive role model of mine, I wanted to find more about her. I started by looking at some of her quotes, just by this I could see how amazing she was as a person- her quotes spoke to me personally and helped me through a lot. My favourite quote is; I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
Recently for Christmas I was given her completed set of poems. Every poem is amazing, has it’s own voice and strengths.
There is still a lot I need to learn about Maya Angelou, I don’t know her work in full detail like I want to and hopefully will in the future, but already she has helped me so much. I watched a speech from Oprah Winfrey, I’m not sure when it was but I believe it was shortly after Miss Angelou passed away, and she told a story of when Oprah was young and upset about something, and that Miss Angelou’s reply was to be thankful. Not to be sad about whatever it was that she lost, but to be thankful. I think that’s an important nowadays. Sometimes it’s easy to be upset over things that seem so big in our lives, but those are the times to be thankful. No matter what is going on in your life, there will always be one small thing to be thankful for- even if it is just the fact that you’re still alive.
